Abstract
Unilateral carotid artery ligation was occasionally performed during carotid endarterectomy, total maxillectomy, or other cancer surgery. At the cases of these operation, we apprehended the risk of brain ischemia related to acute or delayed
neuronal
damage. So we considered the methods of prevention or treatment aganist neuronal damage including barbiturate, steroid, and calcium channel blocker and hypothermic method. But there was one important fact, autohypothermia played an important role
for
prevention of neuronal damage. Someone said hypothermia in forebrain ischemic rat was important factor in development of delayed neuronal damage. We tried to appropriate this fact to unilateral carotid artery ligation for decreasing the risk of
cerebral
ischemia like forebrain ischemic rat. We measured ipsilateral and controlateral brain temperature during unilateral carotid artery ligation and we could take temporal muscle as index to show brain temperature.
